Werewolves Within had been on Asian Does Horror's radar for awhile now. Readers would know that we're suckers for vampire and werewolf movies and when Ubisoft announced that they would be producing a movie adaptation of their video game of the same name, we were utterly stoked.

Now in VR, Werewolves Within is a fast paced game of 'whodunit' with players taking on different roles, from villagers to the werewolf itself. It's like Mafia, but with a supernatural twist and it's one of our favourite party games to play.

In the movie adaptation, Ubisoft has adopted a more modern setting and maintained the comedy genre of the game into the script which made the movie so enjoyable to watch.

Werewolves Within the movie follows Forest Ranger Finn Wheeler, played by Sam Richardson (We're the Millers, Ghostbusters, Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates), a naive, good ole' fashioned nice guy, as he is transferred to the small town of Beaverfield. Once there, he meets Cecily Moore, played by Milana Vayntrub (Life Happens, Ghostbusters), the local Postperson as well as its other quirky townsfolk.

Not long after Finn settles in, the town is shaken by various incidences including an avalanche that blocks the main access, every generator in town destroyed as well as the death of Dave, Jeannie the innkeeper's husband. From the fur discovered on Dave's corpse, visiting environmentalist, Dr. Jane Ellis, surmises that the culprit behind his death is a lycanthrope and it's hiding amongst them. So now it's up to each of the townsfolk to figure out who the werewolf is before everyone ends up dead.

Werewolves Within is a simple, straightforward investigative movie but is strengthened by the script and the acting from the local townsfolk - from the unassuming Jeannie, to the millionaire gay couple Joaquim and Devon. Each character plays an important role in railroading the viewers' perception of who the werewolf is and extends the plot further and further before the final reveal at the tail-end of the movie.

Amusing one-liners pepper Werewolves Within and keeps us sniggering despite the heavy tone and dark atmosphere.

In terms of production quality, Ubisoft spared no expense, from the set designs of the small town of Beaverfield to the character personalities themselves and even the underlying motives of each townsfolk, all these were taken into consideration which did well to enhance the movie even more.

We loved that by the end of the movie, they stuck true to the werewolf mythos and the culprit wasn't just some deranged psychopath like The Wolf of Snow Hollow.

Werewolves Within is a much watch for casual horror fans as it's not too dark, utterly and cleverly comedic and just thoroughly enjoyable.

All in all, Asian Does Horror gives Werewolves Within 👻👻👻👻 ghost emojis out of five.
